Mediathèque and Rheims cathedral – harmony between old and new

In a restored building previously occupied by the police, the Mediathèque covers 6,500 m². A fundamental priority of this project was to conserve one of the classic buildings that have survived Rheims’ turbulent history, and to modernize the building without clashing with the surrounding beauty of the Cathedral and square.

The resulting building is part renovation, part new construction, with glazed façades over a metal structure, which gives the building its classical lines. The glass reflects the Cathedral, which is fully visible from the reading room of the Mediathèque. Master of Works: Town of Rheims. Architect: Jean-Paul Viguier.
