Committee on European Consulting Future

TERMS OF REFERENCE
1. To identify and evaluate significant market and geo-political trends which may impact on the demand for engineering consultancy services and on the clients’ requirements and which may lead to new business models;

2. To formulate a common European approach to global challenges and business developments, in particular:

  • To develop a vision on the role of the engineering consultancy in the construction chain to enhance its position vis-à-vis other actors and clients;
  • To work out a picture of the strong and leading European engineering consultancy firm in 2020, based on the elaboration of a SWOT analysis, to provide support to the firms.

SCOPE OF WORK (2010)
• Developing a vision of the future of the engineering consultancy in Europe in 2020 and beyond
• Assessing the main (external) forces that affect the engineering consultancy business and sector
• Supporting national associations to promote the industry’s development (new markets and clients, new business models, new professional skills, etc.)

DELIVERABLES
- Presentation (May 2010)
The presentation will provide material to guide the national associations’ discussions on trends that impact on the firms’ markets, organisation structure and skill requirements. It is addressing nine strategic issues and will provide guidance to the firms in the decision on business strategies they want to adopt.
Member associations may use the presentation for discussion at national seminars and meetings with other stakeholders, including clients.

- Report (end of 2010)
The report (15 to 20 pages) will contain the outlines of the presentation plus examples and reference documents.
The report will include national economic facts and statistics (importance of the industry) and identify market developments and trends, based on desk research of existing general analyses of global tendencies.
Data to substantiate the Committee’s recommendations will be collected through a simple survey on the profile of both the national association and industry, and trends.
The report will be issued to external audiences (journalists and decision makers) together with a press statement.
